What is an IP address?

An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet, a bit like a postal address for your network. Every website you visit sees the public IP address of your connection, which is given to you by your internet provider.

This page shows the address that our server sees when you open it, followed by its host name, network and approximate location.

IPv4 and IPv6

Two kinds of addresses are in use.

TypeWhat it looks like
IPv4Four numbers separated by dots, such as 203.0.113.25. It is the older and most common format.
IPv6Longer groups of letters and numbers separated by colons, such as 2001:db8::1. It was created because IPv4 addresses are running out.
Public addressThe address websites see. It is shared by all devices behind the same router.
Private addressAn address such as 192.168.1.20 used inside a home or office network. It cannot be reached from the internet.

Why the result may surprise you

Things that change what is shown.

  • VPN or proxy. If you use one, you see the address of the VPN or proxy, not your own.
  • Mobile networks. Many phones share the same public address, and it can change often.
  • IPv4 or IPv6. Your device may use either, depending on your network and on the website.
  • The location is approximate. It is usually right at country level, less so for the city.

How to find your local (private) IP address

The address above is your public one. Your device also has a private address on your home or office network.

  • Windows. Open Command Prompt and type ipconfig. Look for "IPv4 Address" under your active network adapter.
  • macOS. Open System Settings, go to Network, select your connection and click Details. The address is shown under TCP/IP.
  • Linux. Open a terminal and run ip addr or hostname -I.
  • Android. Open Settings, go to Network, tap your Wi-Fi network and look for "IP address". The path varies slightly by brand.
  • iPhone and iPad. Open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, then the info icon next to your network. The address is listed under "IP Address".

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about What Is My IP.

Is my IP address private?

No. Every website and service you connect to can see your public IP address. It does not show your name or your exact address.

Why do I see an IPv6 address?

Your internet provider supports IPv6 and your device chose it for this connection.

Why is the location wrong?

Locations are estimated from provider records. VPNs, mobile networks and providers that route traffic through central points can place you in another city.

How can I change my IP address?

Using a VPN changes the address that websites see. Without one, the address is set by your internet provider and may change when you restart your router, depending on the provider.

Is it safe to share my IP address?

Sharing it with a website or a person you trust is generally low risk, but avoid posting it publicly: it reveals your approximate location and your provider.
